Fab father books

Dads the world over have received their fair share of socks and undies over the past few decades so this Father’s Day why not surprise him with something he can’t get anywhere else – a book made by you, all about him. I am!

My sister and I have scanned photos and articles from our old family albums and I’ve grabbed some more recent shots on my computer so we can make him a gift that has extra special meaning. Long after all those undies and socks have worn thin and lost their significant others, his photo book will be going strong and keeping him smiling.

To get inspired I went searching for some dad-loving books by our customers and here’s what I found.

The World At His Feet by Carmel Denniss

This book and this dad are amazing! Not only is The World At His Feet a great story but the photography and page designs are excellent, and they document Tom Denniss’ run around the world in a truly professional looking publication. Tom set off from the Sydney Opera House in December 2011 to run one marathon a day for 622 days across five continents to raise money for Oxfam, and the book makes you feel like you’re on the 26,232km journey with him. He was supported by his daughters Hannah and Grace, and his wife Carmel who snapped over 50,000 photos then painstakingly chose 200 to layout as full page spreads to showcase his achievement.

Echoes Of Sicily, Words Of Wisdom From The World of Papa Nino by Mim Davies

At our Melbourne Masterpiece Workshop last year I met Mim Davies who was just starting the mammoth job of creating a tribute book for her late father, Papa Nino. Like me, she scanned photos and drawings, and typed out stories and quotes to illustrate her dad’s life in Italy and Australia. It took six months to compile, and she used some great design techniques in the process. Two different fonts for headings and sub-headings, a serif font to make large blocks of text feel less dense, a cursive font to make the quotes appear handwritten, and to break up busy text-only pages she paired them with full-page images. The result is 161 pages bursting with familial love, pride and Italian culture.

A Book For Gerald by Rosalind Kentwell

Gerald Keuneman is a different kind of dad, more like a father-figure to the Whitehorse Orchestra that he has been the Musical Director of for 25 years. On reaching this impressive milestone, his musical family felt his commitment was worth celebrating in a photobook.  It was a group effort that involved Rosalind collecting newspaper clippings and musical programs along with photos and personal statements from orchestra members. The outcome is a comprehensive record of their performances, antics and feelings about Gerald in a clean, consistent layout, and it’s quite a masterpiece – which we feel is the perfect gift for a conductor!

Hunting & Gathering by Kirra Wehlow

Now here’s a man who knows how to have fun, and a woman who knows how to design. Kirra has created a fantastic gift for her husband Glenn, and you can feel the love radiating from the pages filled with photos of all his favourite things: hunting, fishing, and family. She’s cleverly contrasted the dominant blue colour in the photos with simple black or white backgrounds, then neatly tied it all together with white or black key line frames. So not only does Glenn have a personally-made present, but another trophy for the pool room and a family heirloom for the next generation.

Richard’s Love Affair With His Cars by Richard Heal

Who said a bloke can’t make his own book? We love it when we get books made by men about things they love, and in this book Richard documents his 50 year passion for motor vehicles. It’s like a twist on the family history book, where he presents the stories of his seven much-loved cars with photos, magazine clippings, captions and historical detail, in the same way most would commemorate the lives of their relatives. It’s all presented in a series of tasteful, symmetrical layouts, using fonts appropriate to the era and we think his wheels would be proud.
